The monetary Grants and Scholarships for the 2021-2022 fiscal year totalling $125,500 were awarded as noted below at the June, 2022 Grant Luncheon.

❖   Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw - $4,000

Since 1954, Lake Waccamaw Boys & Girls Home has been a sanctuary for hurting children - a safe place for young people who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or other family dysfunction. Lake Waccamaw Boys & Girls Home is a 140-acre, cottage-style living sanctuary for those children who are in desperate need of love and guidance.  While there, youth are taught to develop and use their strengths in positive ways: they learn conflict resolution, time management, and how to interact and build relationships with others in a positive manner, all the while building self-esteem, responsibility, and character.

❖   Brunswick County Christian Recovery Center - $9,000

Brunswick Christian Recovery Center is a faith-based ministry serving those suffering from active addiction.  They offer an extended program of directed activities that stretch from remedial or supplemental education of the individual all the way to daily application of newly learned skills.  The residents not only study the spiritual principles that foster sobriety, but also with the help of a 12-step program begin to build a bright new future by working to erase the wreckage of their past.

❖   Brunswick Arts Council - $3,000

The Mission of the Brunswick Arts Council is to support, sustain, enhance and cultivate the arts in Brunswick County making cultural events, arts education and appreciation of the arts available to the diverse range of county residents.

 ❖   Brunswick Family Assistance - $7,000

Brunswick Family Assistance is dedicated to improving the lives of families and individuals in crisis in Brunswick County by providing emergency assistance and educational and skills development programs.

❖   Brunswick Literacy Council -$10,000

The Brunswick County Literacy Council's mission is "to improve lives by providing literacy skills for adults."  The BCLC uses an umbrella program called Literacy for All to achieve its stated mission. The main components of the Literacy for All program are:  Basic Skills, GED Preparation, English as a second language, Workplace Skills Development, Workforce Preparation, Computer Skills Training, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy.  The BCLC is comprised of employees, board members, partner organizations, and volunteers whose passion it is to significantly reduce adult illiteracy in Brunswick County.

❖   Brunswick Partnership for Housing - $10,000

Brunswick Partnership for Housing (BPH) was established in 2019 through the insightful vision of area church representatives and the Southport-Oak Island community. Even before 2014, this group saw homelessness as a significant, but invisible social problem in our communities.  They witnessed a clear lack of services for families threatened with homelessness. Together with other local agencies they tried to fill the gap. But it wasn’t enough.​

With BPH, the time is now to make the invisible, visible.  As a community we can solve the challenge of homelessness and lack of affordable housing for families in Brunswick County.

❖   Communities in Schools - $8,000

Communities In Schools works directly inside schools, building relationships that empower students to succeed inside and outside the classroom.

❖   Computers 4 Kids - $2,000

Provides computers for students in low-income families.

❖   Hope Harbor Home - $7,500

Grant provides emergency funds to help women and children in transition due to domestic violence and holiday gifts for the children.

❖   Lower Cape Fear LIFECARE - $1,000

Donation will support palliative care, pathway to care and grief support.

❖   Matthew’s Ministry - $6,000

Through Matthew’s Ministry, students who are identified as food insecure in 13 county schools are provided with a weekend backpack of food.  This grant supports the backpack program and increased needs resulting from Covid-19.

❖   New Hope Clinic - $11,000

To provide quality medical, dental, and pharmacy services to low-income, uninsured Brunswick County adults in a caring, patient-centered setting.

❖   Paws-Ability - $2,500

Funds support the education of children on the care of pets; a feral cat program; the neutering and spaying of animals, and paying vet bills for a 501(c)3 animal shelter.

❖   Power Walking Ministries - $2,500

This ministry has provided hundreds of new shoes, socks, and bibles to students in the Brunswick County school system. Power Walking Ministries is based on Romans 10:15 "How Beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things." Wendy's motto is "Good Shoes bring Good things in a child's life." If you want to see the Love of Jesus, just give a child a new pair of shoes! Shoes Change Souls! 

❖   Samara’s Village - $2,500

Help Brunswick County pregnant and parenting adolescents and their families raise healthy babies.

❖   Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter - $4,000

Non-profit wild bird rehabilitation organization located in Brunswick County, North Carolina and serving the surrounding areas. It was founded in 2007 to provide medical treatment for wild birds that are injured, sick, or orphaned. Since then, thousands of wild birds have been returned to their natural habitats and thousands of people have been educated about the needs of these amazing animals.

❖   Smart Start of Brunswick County - $4,000

Smart Start's mission is to ensure all children are healthy and ready for school. Smart Start focuses it energy and efforts in providing services that promote early learning and quality of care for young children from birth through age five, which is the period that 90% of a child’s brain develops. Smart Start of Brunswick County strives to improve the quality of care for young children through many different programs, such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, where any child can receive a book each month until age 5.

❖   Southport-Oak Island Interfaith Food Pantry (SOIIF)- $8,500

Food for Brunswick County residents that qualify for help.

❖   Stepping Up for Arts - $3,000

Sponsor fund-raising and art appreciation activities in the Brunswick County community to help achieve goals. These events may include speaker series, workshops, plein air events, and cultural performances/exhibits at local venues in Brunswick County. They partner with many of the growing art communities and local businesses to expand art education in our county. Each year, SUFA awards scholarships to high school graduates who plan to pursue the Arts in college.

 ❖   WARM – Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry - $3,000

Mission is to repair, rebuild, and make homes accessible; and to inspire service, generosity, and hope.  Serving low-income homeowners in Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, and Pender counties, who are disabled, elderly, and/or veterans.  WARM helps people age in place safely by preventing home accidents and illnesses – preserving their dignity and independence.

❖   WAVES 4 K.I.D.S. - $5,000

Supports the Brunswick County Foster Care System with funding for kids clothing and school supplies. Four-year scholarships are awarded to needs-based students, most of whom are from the foster care system.

❖   St. James Service Club scholarship - $12,000

St. James Service Club scholarships, managed through Waves 4 K.I.D.S., were awarded to two high seniors in the amount of $3,000 per year towards their freshman and sophomore years.
