How We Started

Around a kitchen table, a group of non-golfing friends decided to form an organization with the purpose of making contributions to the community surrounding St. James.

On March 12, 1997, a meeting was held, and the excitement and enthusiasm was contagious.  First project:  Furnishing the then Dosher House (Providence Home) kitchen.

By April the name St. James Service Club was adopted, and regular meetings established.  The goal: to identify and support needs of the Brunswick County Community through active volunteer participation.

From April to December 1997 the group raised $2,735, donated $1040 in kitchen equipment, and $850 in Angel Tree gifts.  94 teddy bears were donated to the “Bears for Sheriffs” program.  Also, a variety of small kitchen appliances, dishes, flatware, linens and baking needs were given to Dosher Home.

The following year $8,850 was raised and over $8,000 donated to Hope harbor, Providence Home, Southport  Elementary PTA and New Hope Clinic.  With gifts in kind a total of $11,590 was raised and close to $10,000 donated.

With 79 members the club was off to a magnificent beginning.
